Marshall, 1947 Melopiza melodica July 7 Newport Bay, Orange Co., Calif. veg but too limited extent for ssp.: ie. Salicornia 2 ft, Frankenia mats, Distichlis up to 15", Juncea in mats 9", juncea? with sharp points 34" radius. There were flats which I covered which were just like Anaheim Bay. Spartina very extensive however usually felt 25 or more yds wide along bay - top 10" or so high, taller where submerged up to 21" not yet in flower. Last years stalks on lower edge were about 32". the whole place indoors as natural areas are concerned is same as Anaheim Bay except god lower & more Spartina x less flats; a home for Savannah Sparrows. No place for Song Sparrows - only in unnatural areas patches of higher growth due to accum. of fresh water due to roads, etc. But some of latter salty with a few sparrows: Cooperi OK for salt habitat. Saw a White-tailed Kite. A patch willows nr. salt works dry - no sparrows.
