Marshall 1947 Melospiza melodia July 6 Newport Bay Orange Co. Calif. Then extensive farms, fresh H2O marsh, Scirpus & typha, willows, with Marsh Hawks, Song Sparrows, Yellowthroats, probably Marsh Wrens. Below the fill the creek is str & receives Tidal water - flats have deep Salicornia, & Chenopodium need in masses up to 3' tall or 4' & Scirpus "mucosus" = Calif? along ditches. typha & S aenus in one place There were Song Sparrows here but not abundant, & they got pretty far out in Salicornia but mostly, only to fly from one patch of Scirpus to another. Total of about 4 birds seen. They do get in a salty environment. Below the salt works & from there to the mouth of the bay, the bay water is wide & the flats are fl. lows & gradually sloped so there are few flats high enough for anything but Spartina. Spartina occupies almost the whole bay sides of the bay. It is short & doesn't have Song Sparrows, wrens nor Yellowthroats. Only numerous Savannah Sparrows - feeding on bare mud.
