Marshall, 1947 Melospiza melodia July 7th Santa Ana R. Orange Co. Calif. Salicornia clump. I approach and it gave alarm notes & retreated a way but stuck pretty well to a territory (wasn't found there 1/2 hr later - but they do not respond this time of yr. very well to squeaks - so is no proof it was not in vicinity ) This bird was ad & seemed to be a ♂ perched high . Another tailless mouthing bird was larger - seemed to be ad also & perhaps the ♀ mate - stayed near the 1st. they were definitely grazing under the Salicornia. But there were some Baccharis-like bushes & Arrowweed near the highway that they may have operated in also. This proves - at the not natural habitat, that Cooperi can live in Salicornia, if deep enough. Rare because of it nos. of Swannels? No Yellowstone or Wrens. July 7 Newport Bay Orange Co. Calif. ( area at side of highway (N side) filled in now has willows ) Upper reaches still natural salt marsh habitat winds for several miles up to a salt works. Then a big area of Salicornia, then a big dam-like fill
