Melospiza melodia
July 7th Santa Ana River Orange Co. Calif.
silty ground where savannahs feed.
Salicornia grew over much of the
area - several acres - except for
occasional mats of tall dense
Frankenia. The slough had high
banks, undercut & the Savannahs
fed in no. along the mud borders,
or driftwood & under the overhanging
Salicornia sod. I have never seen
so many Savannahs, many juncos,
many [illegible] singing. They go in great
doves - may be none in one part
of marsh & you look to the other
side & you can see 20 scattered
around within 1/2 acre all on tops
of taller Salicornias. I never saw
them go from a perch down into
the sal. but saw some hop among
the top friggs feeding. They are so
curious that they stay up to look at
me, then fly. However, the most have

They were constantly popping up to perch,
from nowhere. All I saw foraging
were on bare ground or on the mud
banks & the slough. I found 2
Song Sparrows among them - one was
perched 6" from a Savannah on a
