Marshall, 1947 Melospiza melodia July 7 Anaheim Bay, Orange Co. Calif. Growth form of Vegetation: Spartina Jaumea Distichlis Salicornia Limonium Triglochin Frankenia Suaeda There is bare and showing vegetation stems slough flats In some places the flats have a more abrupt slope into the slough & lack the border of Spartina in which event there is a mud bank upon which Savannah sparrows forage. Savannahs perch on the Suedas to call or sing. No yellowthroats, no tudy wrens? Hails? About a mile inland I found a patch of about 1 acre of Salicornia sheltered by a levee and on uneven ground caused probably by dumping dirt. It was up to 30" high & very thick & continuous. Frankenia also in great mats up to 2' high. Many Savannahs, too local & restricted for song sparrows - shows that Sal. can grow higher under non-natural conditions. July 7 mouth Santa Ana River, Orange Co. Calif. A slough extends W several hundred yds from the river mouth on the N side of park highway. Slough not natural - is dyked in & looks like dirt dumped here. Nevertheless all is covered by large growth of Salicornia up to 3' high continuous except around edges where dry 112.
