up than the lupine). On actual cliffs, where ss also occur in the continious mat of veg - Lupine does not occur - & there there is less grass also. I didn't study that particular habitat (which is found on the trail down to Muire Rocks). However I did find a habitat where Vbs are contig - resembling structurally a Salicornia - Gundelia marsh, pairs 40 yds or less apart. Do birds extend contig along coast? N of the lighthouse? More or less but not so good now because of grazing - would be sufficiently wet OK if not grazed. Stopped at a level plain further N with rich stand of Ericameria ericoides (Mock Heather - compositae) & Baccharis dotting the plain = with no ss; but numerous White-crows & Savannahs. Hiked along road in area of "Blacksmith Shop" & noted 2 at least ss singing 50 yds up N-facing slope - 50 yds above the stream - they may have been close to an "edge" or ridge above - this a very tall dense soft chaparral, poison-oak, lebes, Baccharis & I think too dense & high for contig pop. ss sparrows.
