Marshall, 1947 Melospring June San Mateo County trip. Cloudy & raining all day. Drove from Lake Merced to the King Mt Rd along the Skyline Drive (Hwy 5). From the level of Mussel Rock to the County Prison road, this blud. goes along the top of the main peninsular ridge which here is scattered with ponds - & referred to in previous notes where SS become continuous except in grazed & plowed areas - or nos. around ponds & up & over ridges where Conium predominates. There is in a couple places just a suggestion of sea-side habitat, but on whole there more of this area has natural growth - does have large pgy SS. Just 5 of the Rd to SF Prison we find a giant chaparral of Baccharis, Ceanothus & Heteromeles 12' high dry and covered with moss & lichens, wind controlled bushes meeting side by side to form contig. canopy. No SS here except some in gully wet valley (quins & conium) & one at edge being (across from cattle watering place. The ridge W of San Andreas Lake have probably no SS except in willow gullies.
