Melospiza
May 29 Alameda Co., Salt marshes, Calif.
All salt marshes from Roberts Landing
south to Castle Hills are the bunk -
no natural condition remains, they are
used for sewage & garbage, the rest
for salt works - & the salicornia
burned off even the banks of the salt
ponds.
The slough slumion on Quadrangle just W.
Hayward station is man made & contains
sewage, does not form contiu habitat.
However where SPRR tracks cross it just N
Russell City, are some willows, Conima, rusted
with less [illegible] acres in extent but
at least 3 pr. Song sparrows - juncos
also seen. A very small isolated
piece of habitat disconnected from any other
birds for possibly a mile in any directio.
Johnson Landing - salt works.
S side San Mateo bridge road is farm
with sm. duck ponds bordered by
willows & S. cangaris & Typha. This
near salt works (where no salt marsh
sparrows seen). One ss seen on this
duck pond - an adult-brown, with heavy
black streaks (saltamensis) - and thus
example of very small isolated habitat.
Area big enough for 2 or 3 pairs possibly.
Drove onto salt works at Leslie.
