May 9 Peninsula trip with Jno.
Drove along Coast Highway to Halfmoon Bay then over to Palo Alto. Hills fronting (immediately) the ocean seem to be drier here than Marin Co., get Artemisia californica & little Geraditium & few song Sparrows in such a place as Hill N Montara. But on the crest, where fog is caught, gigantic chaparral- willows tall (20') Geonthus, etc ferns - must have contin.. SS population. The (going inland) apparently contin. SS in moist undergrowth & Redwood, then oak- madrone down bay slope, then finally rests to willows along streams by time reach flat oak-grassland. This is all conjectural [RIGHT] Heard Hermit Thrush, & Purple Martins in Redwoods of Summit Skyline Blvd.
May 11 north Walnut Creek, Contra Costa Co., Calif.- sunny clear calm, 5:30-7:30 AM. Got as far as 1700 000 mark on Pacheco Creek, Carguinez [] This survey of particular interest because stream was denuded of veg. in 1939 which made all the way gap between Highway 4 & the RR. Now a contin pop. but very shinggy at RR vicinity. The rest of Pacheco to bay must be about same as what I covered - all unnatural with banks, etc.
