Marshall, 1947
Melospiza
April 29 San Mateo Co., Calif.
Accompanied Wade Fox along west of hills of
SF Peninsula. Series of ponds - typha,
willow-bordered. Summit supports
tremendously dense populations - on very
moiste ground; cover is junceus, Baccharis,
Heracleum, multitude of other flowers &
weeds. More above dense & terr. more
overlapping than San Pablo marsh.
At SSF salt marsh saw 3 pairs
pusillula along 350 yds of slough in
very small st marsh relic - being now
drained & filled. These birds noticeably
small & yellow below, grey above. Not
much singing, are in pure salicornia,
but still only on edge sloughs when
hop or mind of flat edge or banks.
Flush from salicornia. Grindelia present
but not a factor in SS dist. as is
so higher than salicornia & is uncommon
& not conspicuous, as was found before
at this marsh; SS in pure salicornia,
forage under banks, silent largely, fly
long distances (100 yds) along sloughs.
One pair went into Baccharis briefly on
roadside. Do not "squeek out"! Very elusiv
& mouselike; got diff all around from
conspicuous, singing, fighting SS & hills
above. Grindelia is cuneifolia
