Marshall, 1946 Melospiza melodia Sept. 14-22 Majillaris, Solano Co, Southampton Bay salt marsh Collected at 2 pts in the marsh. 1st at east side or edge of bay, bad tidal, salicornia too low for SS which occured only in tall Scirpus californicus and Typha. Not numerous. 2 birds taken - only on plumage. None in extensive tract 3-angled low Scirpus. 2nd pt: at north end of marsh near diking & near a dump where deep Salicornia cut by sloughs bordered by tall thickets Quindelia and some Baccharis. Some tules in the sloughs. SS abundant but only in these last 3 plants - did forage in mud under overhanging banks of sloughs as they do in Marin Co (samuelis) and pusillata (Bay Tom). Did not forage in Salicornia. All birds fully molted. Pusillula Alameda Co San Leandro Bay salt marsh. Collected on north side of Hegenberger Rd opposite point where joined by "Road No. 1". Song Sparrows abundant. One pure juvenile seen. Habitat mainly lupuriant tall, Salicornia in which birds foraged - also under overhanging mud banks & sloughs. From these forage areas, birds would congregate in loose groups in large Baccharis pilularis and quindelia thickets on slightly higher ground. All 10 birds collected were fully molted. Forage by drop to flying to slough bank, or to Quindelia where light than stand.
