Marshall, 1946 11. Melospiza melodia Sept Samuelis Contra Costa Co., Oleum salt marsh 14-22 Fresh-water samacensis with headquarters mainly in willows and Baccharis at edge of the marsh. Marsh too small to maintain any "unswamped" samuelis. All birds in ad plumage. [I coll in more trap in Typha, Scirpus californicus to north] Marin Co. Corte Madera Creek salt marsh at mouth. Collected approx. 2 mi W Corte Madera a[t] edge of SF bay (by a little hill on S side marsh at mouth Corte Madera Creek.) This marsh not contig with any suitable fresh-water habitat on entire S edge where I collected. Took birds exclusively from Griendelia bushes growing 2-3 feet high along edges of little sloughs winding thru dense Salicornia. All in ad plumage, some exceedingly worn considering the season. Due to rubbing against Salicornia probably. The birds forage away the g closely-packed stones. Very abundant. Gallinas Creek salt marsh at mouth Similar in all respects to Corte Madera except there are Baccharis bushes & tall weeds at the immediate edge of the marsh where birds congregate - from the marsh. Birds exceedingly abundant. None go upland - where no fresh water habitat contiguous. Coll. at apt. on McKean's Rd approx 3 mi W Forbes
