Melospiza melodia
Sept 14-22 Gouldi
seen, 3 ad, 1 juv. The juv & 2 ad coll. by Fox.
Apparently not a good habitat - too remote -
because of high elevation - from any
adjoining habitat. The 4 birds probably
post-breeding wanderers from Sonoma Valley.
Sonoma Valley Probably sparse song sparrow
populations along willow-bordered streams
in center of Valley - as at Kenwood,
Schellville. None collected. Judging from
Longhurst's air observations of all other lakes
& from my views, there is no place
near the bay from Petaluma to Napa
where dense marshland populations can
be found. This vast area then is very
sparsely populated & only along streams.
SantaCruz's
Alameda Co., 1 1/2 mi N Alvarado Collected
for about 1 1/2 hrs, on E side highway #17 in
extensive fresh-water
swamp on a tributary, but
north of Alameda Creek, and within
4 miles of SF Bay. Willows, Typha
and tall weeds (mostly Rumex) harbored
great nos. S.S. They were not in dry
typha however. Rumex formed large
stands 4-5 ft tall on dry ground &
had many song sparrows. A great concentration
here bounded by dry farmlands. All fully
molted. A good place to look for contiguity into salt marsh.
