Marshall, 1946
Melospiza melodia
May 5 Tomales Bay Main Co., Caly.
Salicornia area (within 20 yds) but
no long flights between the 2
habitats. Tabley found ten, fixed
out in the salt marsh (by chasing D's).
All birds were noticeably deep reddish-
brown - almost chestnut - was evident
because they were in brilliant sunlight.
Saw several pairs of Savannah Sparrows
(salam note around nest)
in some of sparser Salicornia. Both
species heard in song from center of
marsh area north of main large slough.
4 or 5 pairs Song Sp. in 100 yds on one side
of edge this slough.
Tomales Point Song Sparrows noted in thickets
occurring within Bishop Pine Forest on top
of ridge where I collected ? #3397.
Point Reyes Song Sparrows abundant in
low chaparral of Yellow Lupines on slopes
facing ocean. Equally abundant as
White-crowns - habitat of the 2 sp. identical
here.
W. End Island #1, Solano Co.: S.Sp. abundant in
Salicornia & also in pure dense Baccharis
or higher ground. In latter habitat noticed
at least 2 pairs giving alarm notes; resting
in Baccharis chaparral (sammulis) & watched one
bird foraging under Baccharis.
