Marshall, 1946 Melospiza melodia April 7 Elkhorn Slough, Monterey Co., Cal. the Salicornia. Continued to sing from A, however ( cattails) where there is a little fresh-water marsh higher than the salicornia. I was surprised to see one or 2 birds which sang for a while on tufts of salicornia, then slipped in to the ground and foraged thru the dense Salicornia growth, then finally flushed across to the fresh water marsh. Nevertheless seemed at home temporarily in the Salicornia. At E & F there was luxuriant Salicornia growth just like that inhabited by priddula on the SF Bay - but no song sparrows -(Savannah Sparrows numerous, however). One or two Song Sparrows singing in willows & tufts of fresh-water marsh at B. But here, none seen going out into the salicornia. A & B are both very small patches of fresh water habitat which both join Salicornia marsh. Would be good place for egg... Best Salicornia-Grindelia habitat is at C - no song sparrows - took 3 photos. No adjacent fresh-water habitat. Only Savannah Sparrow. Proves sartacernis doesn't occur in this habitat
