Marshall, 1946 Stelgidopteryx ruficollis May 11 Strawberry Canyon, Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. Two seen foraging over Strawberry pool in am. Found carrying small twigs into hole in bank 75 yds west of pool. Bank made by road excavation 8 ft high, hole apparently a gopher hole 1 ft down from top of bank. Swallows would generally fly directly into hole; once pushed on a root near entrance. Would drop twig if held crosswise, or would not enter and would fly around and grasp stick by the end so that it pointed forward, so could fly directly into hole with it. Hole about 2-3" diam, too small for stick carried crosswise in mouth. Bird would sometimes drop stick even if held str out in front. Two birds at nest - only one at a time.
