Phalaenoptilus
May 4 head of Strawberry Canyon, Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif.
9-12 PM warm, clear, calm, full moon.
Parked in Claremont Canyon, linked over ridge to upper road in Strawberry Canyon, and NE almost to foot of Grizzly Peak. None heard in Claremont Canyon at all - extensive Baccharis chaparral. About 5 in Strawberry canyon, then along upper road where proceeds generally N-S & thru Eucalyptus.
1st another in Eucalypt high & to S.
1st heard from Artemesia chaparral above road,
2nd (coll) from dead stub of Eucalypt along road - perched on top of vertical twig 75" high. Calling steadily. 2 more heard in tall Eucalypt at base Grizzly Peak, but far apart. One flew across road & up into Artemesia chaparral where called steadily from squatting position on flat rock-rock - a high rock overlooking steep chaparral. These 5 birds very widely spaced & generally calling in concert for 15-20 min then long intervals of silence when wouldn't even respond to imitated calls. 2 specimens given to Thomas Howell.
