Otus scops
June 21 Whilatus Forest, Tulare Co., Calif.
It responded readily to my whistle slight infection. Retreated far up hill then stood its ground & began to call then fly across me to another perch etc mostly from 1 side of me to the other between 2 tall trees a Yellow pine & White Fir. Gave beside succession of evenly spaced single slightly infected whistles couple seconds apart -- a trill of notes 2/sec or more & regular note followed by 2nd at lower pitch.
Hear'd 3 Otus flow on way back still light temp +1. , etc
Finally call from conifer perch on top of yellow pine where calling loudly.
Later PM went looking for Otus heard whole family of Strip in distance Found 4 or 5 of Otus incl tern+1 both came rapidly to imitate, 2 up above haunted house & one on slope above (N) creek', one in valley of creek no public camp in denser growth - 1st time I've head them there. The 2 by haunted house were very persistent & one would come within 3 ft of me in little low reders. When calling by itself would have single loof. When I would call it would
