Otus scops
June 20 Big Meadow, 7500 ft. Tulare Co. Caly.
in same old campground or rd to
Buck Rock near little meadow surrounded
by giant red firs & smaller ladjypdes.
Jeffrey pine & brush space on adjacent
granite slopes. In evening Robinis
chased a Long - eared Owl to tree
over our camp. Later I looked for
Otus & found 2 separated 300 yds apart.
The 1st had terr incl our camp &
followed me back to camp. Its
headquarters were in a grove in a
ravine 3500 yds to N. Here I called
June 21 it up again the next Am in broad
daylight. It hooted occasionally but
never left its perch high in crown
& near trunk of tall Jeffrey Pine. It
was not seen & didn't fly.
Other birds:
Hammond flycatcher, Robinis hermit thrushes
Williamson Sapsuckers, Juncoes, Audubon
Warblers numerous.
Afternoon drove toward Horse Coral Mdw
past Big Meadow Weaver & Boulder Creeks
along N - facing slope of pure Red Fir
then S- "" "" of brush where saw
White - Throated Swift.
June 23 Whitaker's Forest, W slope Redwood Mt. Tulare Co.
In evening heard & coll a Glaucidium
up same ravine where heard yrs past.
