Marshall, 1947 Otus scops Jun26 Angeles Crest Hiway LA Co. Calif. Gumos, Dark Crows etc. And Warblers. Drove on to Buckhorn Flat situated in broader valley with more gentle slopes & better forest & larger patches of Ceonothus & Arctostaphylos there often in perfect circular areas. Would be good place for cemmies of Otus. A stream runs thru campgd & is veritable oasis & paradise for birds with willows, repican flowers, Giant Sugar Pines, White Firs & Cedars, tall Jeffreys on dry slopes. Many robins, jays, gumcos, warblers, Fox Sparrows, Nuttallches etc White- headed & 1/2 Ivy Woodpeckers. On way home noted that Chilao, Charleton Flats & probably also Barley Flats are islands of remnant pine forest once continuous with Weterna Mt. forest but now isolated by fires. Jun29 Walker Pass - Saw Cactus Wrens, Scott's Oriole & Desert Sparrows in Joshua tree forest on E side pass. Abrupt & dramatic transition to Pinynum - Juniper Artemesia on other side extend several miles down W slope. Jun 20 Big Meadow 7500' Tulare Co. Calif. Camped
