Marshall, 1947 Otus flammeolus June 16 Angeles Crest Hwy from Gabriel Mts., L.A. Co., Calif. Had supper at Chilao in Yellow Pine, Coulter Pine - Artemesia tridentata area. No Otus but many Brownhills. Later drove up highway and stopped on NW side Waterman Mt., 6600ft in a little steep canyon. 3 Otus flammeolus were found within 200yds of car. No moon. Steep outside of granite boulders, sparse occasional low patches ceanothus, or Arctostaphylos, sparse spindly forest of widely separated Jeffrey Pine, White Fir, Sugar Pine, Incense Cedar. 2 Otus coll from Jeffrey Pines. Calling regularly when neared their respective metagoli. Often seen to leave a tree and sail on curved ridgid wings very fast and very low to near foot of next "hosting tree" then would call from near the top or hidden in crown foliage near trunk. .'. Must take a rapid sail and then flap way up to a perch just like a shrike. Next AM awoke to confirm the god-foraken nature of this rocky, dry, sparse forest which seems perfect for Otus scope. Other birds noted: a couple Jays (Steller), Plain sparrow, hawks nesting in stub, chickadees,
