Kaye - 1933. Santa Cruz, so', Santa Cruz Co., Calif. Oct. 4, 1933. Summary: There is a good deal of the ranch we didn't get to cover. We didn't get down to the rice fields where many different species of water birds were reported. We didn't cover the north section of the ranch at all, north or east of the lagoon. The last half of the ranch we likewise didn't work, but to the best of my knowledge we did work the most interesting and productive parts of the ranch. There seems to be a scarcity of the smaller mammals on the ranch. We found very few peromyscus, mus musculus, and no Dipodomys. However, there did seem to be plenty microtus and reith - rodentamps. The Douglas ground squirrel was common in one or two small sections, and a few were to be found in a few larger areas, the open fields. The large number of carnivores, and predatory birds attest to the presence of many small mammals, but also serves to act as a check on the wholesale spread of the smaller species.
