Nov. 27, 1933. NW part Kelso Valley, 4500 ft., Kern Co., Calif. As soon as I left camp this morning to run my trap line I saw a large hawk sitting on top of a digger pine. I shot it. It was a rough legged hawk. Also I saw many more birds than usual down in the Joshua, 3 cactus wrens, 2 cactus woodpeckers, one shrike and 6 sage sparrows. From my traps I took five dipsos, three tui, one saroriensis, me ammos, and one pack rat. I had out 10 good pack rat sets. I caught four dipsos in them and only one pack rat! Back at camp or nearer camp I shot a jack-rabbit. I hunted the north facing slope again this morning, particularly for thrasher and brush rabbit. I saw no thrashers, and only one brush rabbit, and I didn't get him. I shot a brown towhee. 437 Rough legged hawk 438 Neotoma lepida 439 Dipodomys mohavensis 440 Dipodomys mohavensis Nov. 28, 1933.
