Our approach prevented a natural termination of the battle because the hawk flew away. The squirrel escaped down one of the many holes nearby.

Today we have worked mostly in the wooded section nearer the river. We arose at 5 A.M., and drove out towards the dairy. (See map) In an open field - there were five deer gathered under an oak tree. Though no count was made, the general impression was that there were 3 does and 2 bucks. They were all young. We failed to collect one; they escaped into the timber.
We hunted deer most of the rest of the morning, particularly in the wooded area just east of The Hagoon, and in one of the green draws S.E. of the ranch headquarters. This latter area is choked with elder berry and wild grape. Everywhere we hunted, especially in the latter area, deer tracks and feces were every place. We just got occasional glimpses of a deer.
