French Meadows,
Piute Mountains,
Kern Co., Calif. Oct. 22, 1933
This is our first day here. We got
in last night and set up camp at the
upper part of the meadows. Before I
go ahead with notes of this camp, I
want to say that I shot a raven
yesterday about a mile + a half south
of Piute out of a dead blue oak. I
shot a red tail hawk one mile south
of Piute out of a scrubby tree.

The eutamias was shot by R. M. Gilman.
The rest I caught in traps. I set six
gopher sets, as stated, and 15 microtus traps
along the edge of willow lined streams originating
in springs near camp. I caught three microtus
a half hour after setting the traps. I also set
10 traps in rocks, and under logs on the side
of the hill. I set out three pack rat traps
in willow nests along the stream. I set.
