page - 1933 66 French Meadows, Piute Mountains, Kern Co., Calif. Oct. 22, 1933 This is our first day here. We got in last night and set up camp at the upper part of the meadows. Before I go ahead with notes of this camp, I want to say that I shot a raven yesterday about a mile + a half south of Piute out of a dead blue oak. I shot a red tail hawk one mile south of Piute out of a scrubby tree. 252 Raven - wt: 980 gms. Skull 1½ mi. S. Piute, Kern Co., Calif. Oct. 21, 1933. No other ravens near. Taken from dead oak. From French Meadows, in an open grassy field, I took today a ✓ 253 Thomomys ♀ wt: 104 265-60-28-7 ✓ 254 Microtus ♂ wt: 69.5 187-60-23-18 ✓ 255 Microtus ♂ wt: 58 182-60-24-18 ✓ 256 Thomomys ♀ wt: 110 215-68-28-8 ✓ 257 Eutamias ♂ wt: 69 240-110-36-20 The eutamias was shot by R. M. Gilman. The rest I caught in traps. I set six gopher sets, as stated, and 15 microtus traps along the edge of willow lined streams originating in springs near camp. I caught three microtus a half hour after setting the traps. I also set 10 traps in rocks, and under logs on the side of the hill. I set out three pack rat traps in willow nests along the stream.
