S. side Thompson Canyon, 3900'; Kern Co.,
calif. Oct. 11, 1933.
It rained quite hard yesterday
afternoon, and some again last night.
I had out 20 mouse traps in a rock and
rabbitt brush habitat. I caught 3 pero.
m.s., and one kangaroo rat, the latter
was ruined by the large ants which are
here. The wet night may be to blame for
the poor catch.
Today the weather has been threat-
ening, but tonight it is clear and cold.
I spent a great deal of time today
hunting and looking the country over
more thoroughly. I found a line of
good pack rat nests in Basin Creek, and
set eight traps there. I set out 5 gopher
sets and caught one today. Ray caught
another in an open field, and I put it
up. I also set out 15 mouse traps in
a sage-rabbitt-brush association. The
signs there are good for kangaroo rats.
I shot a canyon hairy woodpecker
and a plain titmouse out of a blue oak
in mid-field and a slender billed
muthatch out of a blue oak on a high
peak to the north & above here. I shot
two hilldeer (mates) out of the wet field
100 yards downstream from camp.
Later, after I get to know this
