aye - 1933. 43 S. side Thompson Canyon, 3900'; Kern Co., calif. Oct. 11, 1933. It rained quite hard yesterday afternoon, and some again last night. I had out 20 mouse traps in a rock and rabbitt brush habitat. I caught 3 pero. m.s., and one kangaroo rat, the latter was ruined by the large ants which are here. The wet night may be to blame for the poor catch. Today the weather has been threat- ening, but tonight it is clear and cold. I spent a great deal of time today hunting and looking the country over more thoroughly. I found a line of good pack rat nests in Basin Creek, and set eight traps there. I set out 5 gopher sets and caught one today. Ray caught another in an open field, and I put it up. I also set out 15 mouse traps in a sage-rabbitt-brush association. The signs there are good for kangaroo rats. I shot a canyon hairy woodpecker and a plain titmouse out of a blue oak in mid-field and a slender billed muthatch out of a blue oak on a high peak to the north & above here. I shot two hilldeer (mates) out of the wet field 100 yards downstream from camp. Later, after I get to know this
