Frigate Bird
Nov 19, 1939 - Wake, very many birds
seen - in air mostly q's + immatures
many nests [illegible] in scrub (3 ft.)
Pemphix acidula at Southern end of
lagoon, males or nests ? 3 with wattles
expanded. Birds seems to be perched
over most of the island but the
largest concentrations were near east
shore of lagoon, North end of Wake ner
ocean (by brown booby nesting site)
and at Southern end of lagoon (mostly?)
The male gives two cries one a
resonant mellow whistle in a rapid
uniform series (however I believe it
drops gradually in pitch & tempo
near the end! The other seems to
be a warning - not very loud or
fierce. Egg is very narrow & pointed,
white. Nest is very brief, flat on top,
[illegible] -- rough foundation - 1/2" diam
[illegible] -- smooth but made of 5" diam
Side Top coarse material

of first Water meadow [illegible] 3 with
inflated throats, puring head.
Feb 11 Wake AM - On Sea fishing trip, Gave us
a lot of trouble diving at plugs bait, more
at red head plug than at a real fish
(a mullet) depth, 12 to six to twelve inches.

air all time, pulled out line. Bird prepared by Harry Sweetser
