Oct 23 Peal - Moved very rapidly - creeping motion. Loud whistle. Adults stood around and complained & warned young who scurried away, keeping under cover.

Oct 26 Peal - Caught small rail at end of walk front of South wing of Hotel. Froze underneath Boerhaavia diffosa (a mat-like growth) I layed down with the young bird in my hands & watched the mature birds. Came within 3 ft, only one made menacing gesture - advanced in launched position with wings open & scouted back, possibly mother, 6 birds gathered. Littered on checked constantly all black down - thin (I think two parted - forgot to notice), eye brown feet black legs longer than they appear when bird on ground see. Then it creeps black black, prominent claw on front of wing, skin black with bristly cut - (all black mentioned in connection with young is not pure black but no color shade is perceptible). Adult eye red, legs brownish grey, bill brownish grey, pink cut. In walking bird makes succession of quick steps definite pause forced in cautious approach for raised power between each step - flatweighted or flatfoot and other foot neutral
