Thyons 1939 Blue Faced Booby Pg 6
July 18 1939 - Wake, East end, A.M. only
2 of sp seen in adult plumage
recognized by black on wing extending
all the way to body ? seeming
to be continuous with the black
of the tail also the band of
brown area behind bill & noticeably
black. Seen from beach 1/4 mi.
East of [illegible] anchorage of Labelle
Sept 12 1939 - Wake, 1 PM, 1/4 mile east
of Southern tip of Wake, 3 crippled
adult birds by first Turnforlia (??) off
from beach, one had wing dislocated
or broken close to base (prob Frigate
bird) other two had no obvious
defects but could not quite take off,
probably other birds fed them as
they did not seem to be starving.
Description - large compared to red
footed booby bill yellow almost
bright skin between bill & feathers
very dark blue-black eye beads
pure yellow & body p white
except for dark primaries, secondaries
& tail feet grey. I caught the
bird with the dislocated wing
he was strong and extremely fierce.
M. 100 yds N.W. of Labelle anchor a
female under a Turnforlia on 2 eggs,
nest was a slight depression in
fine gravel, eggs were white
but very dirty scarred & blood
stained I scars appears to have been
made by a thrust with the bill
