Grey backed Tern Feb 14 - Wake 3:00 to 3:30 about 5 noticed along shore of Wake by Labell Feb 15- Wilkes A.M. about 10 noticed flying upwind 75 yards off shore-in front of dock Feb 17 - Wake, 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM, about 400 seen from Hool point south and from to Peacock Point and a mile toward Wilkes. Flying over the beach except 3/4 mi south west of Peacock Point a bunch of about 150-200 a few sooty terns with them. Differences from sooty tern 1 smaller, 2 grey back, 3 narrow black band from bill thru eye, 4 Wingt proportionally longer and more flexible in flight, 5 wing beat slower, 6 cry a single note, weaker, plaintive, mournful. March 17 Wake - A number seen during fishing expedition in outboard, trolling outside (April 2 - saw none on Wake) May 18, saw two by Wilkes outside dock while going out to launch for supply ship unloading May 24, saw one off North point of Wilkes 10:30 Aug 23 - Not more seen
