T. Lyons 1939 pg e Sooty Tern June 26 - PM - Wake Hermit crabs must be scavengers under one tree was a mass of them over a bushle in volume. The Nesting site had a not too strong dried fish smell. July 19 - AM Wake - Nesting sight developing quite a stench. many young can fly now. the dark brown grey [illegible] cream tipped feathers give on the back give way to uniform color feathers abt time the young flys underneath at this time breast is light grey belly & abdomen dark sooty grey gives way to solid color (?) underparts birds in this bicolor under side phase certainly suggest swallows. plumage has slate color hue. Nov 15 + 16 Peal - a number heard calling as they flew up wind at night
