Sand piper (Sturptail Sandpiper)
Sanderling
Aug 30 - Pearl 2 P.M. two thirds way down
from pier to N point of pearl on beach
of lagoon, bird seen about 50 ft ahead
did not fly now along the beach with
sort of a rolling bouncing gate for 200 yds
finally Mr Gooden Chief mechanic made a run
for the bird then only 20 ft ahead
bird flew flight very similar to turnstone
seemed to be in a perfectly straight line
at least all or some level, wings
the narrow, curved, a lighter color
can region down the center of upper surface,
light tan (apparently), of course it was not but
the bird seemed gave me the feeling that it
was a young turnstone (flight boot tail, file,
light band down center of wing). Feet very
dark, [illegible] prob black, but could have
been dark red or dark grey, bill dark (black or
dark grey) gen color white underparts light
relatively light above, greyish might be
brownish. head greyish on top tan or sides - the
only difinate color pattern. Size seemed very
small.
Sept. 12 - Wake PM, 5 birds seen, 3
in groups just East of S tip of Wake
or more 200 yds further East +
one half way to Eastern point from labeil
anchor, all on sand or fine gravel.
upper parts light grey inconspicuously
mottled, marked underparts white, bill
black, feet dark head greyish (forgot
whether crown darker or lighter than edges.
