July 2 Columbia R. at mouth of Deschutes R.
rattle-snake was also found.
75 mice traps were set on the
E. end of the island and we then
rowed back to Miller's place. One
old resident there told us that coyotes
and rattle-snakes were numerous
on the island. He said that he
had seen coyotes swimming across
from the Ore. side.
July 3 Columbia R., at mouth of Deschutes R.
This morning Johnson, Tevis and I returned to Miller's Island. Tevis
hunted while Johnson and I picked
up our traps. My catch was:
Perognathus parvus 3♂ 2♀
Peromyscus maniculatus 1♂
The 75 traps were set from 5 to
20 yards apart through sand dunes,
sagebrush, and level juncoles.
The Peromyscus was caught in the
sagebrush and the Perognathus were
cought along sand dunes. I saw
one white-tailed jackrabbit but
did not get a shot. Later however,
I managed to shoot an adult ♂
near the south slope at the middle
of the island. The rabbits were seen
