Oct. 1 Huichica Cr. 200 ft. Napa Co. Calif.
11:00 AM As I approached colony 4 large adults
ran toward holes. 2 entered while I
was still some 100 yd distant, the others
waited until I was about 50 yd. distant.
They paused on mounds by burrows. One gave
several alarm notes. I took up a position
about 20 yd above burrows and waited. One
appeared 14 min later - came about halfway
out of burrow - surveyed landscape
for 2 min., then apparently seeing me
withdrew.
Alarm notes from a nearby colony
near or turned my attention - Cooper
hawk had just made unsuccessful
attempt. One large adult remained
at mouth of burrow, nearly repeatedly
giving alarm notes. Several young
squirrels had previously been noted
at this colony and hawk was probably
trying for one of these.
One across galley - sat in same place
11:30 - 12:05 scratched with hind foot once
smelled about or ground once otherwise
spit as remained almost in same
position. Paid no attention to flicker
flying overhead (30 ft.)
