Odocoileus hemionus
Crooked R., 3400 ft., at Mouth of Bear Cr, Crooke Co. Ore.
June 30
Deer tracks were seen along the R.
and along the sides of the canyon. The
country was quite sparsely timbered with
Juniperus occidentalis. The deer were
evidently spending the day bedded on
the higher slopes and coming down
to the R. at night for water as all
tracks seen were going up or down
the slopes.
Brooks Mdw., 4300 ft., 9 mi E N EMt Hood, Hood River Co, Ore.
July 8
Deer tracks were numerous about
camp. They seemed to follow the roads
especially through heavy timber and
underbrush and evidently came out on
the Mdw. at night for water and
to graze. Most of the tracks were
of does and fawns; the older bucks
were probably ranging at a higher
elevation at this time of year. The
general size of the tracks together
with statements from residents of Mt. Hood
Hood River indicated that all of
the deer in this vicinity were
Blucktail (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus).
