July 31 N.E. edge Alkali Lake, 4200 ft., Lake Co., Ore
Yesterday we traveled on to the above
location where we made a temporary
camp at the edge of the playa.
I picked up a large rattlesnake
dead on the road at 11 mi. N. Long Co.
Co. Ore.
Near camp I set out 55 mouse traps
baited with oat-meal and 15-20 yd.
apart. They were set among sand
dunes covered with scattering, but fairly
large sagebrush, greewood, and rye
gress. The catch was:
Dipodomys ordii 4 ? 5 ?
Peromyscus maniculatus 3 ? 2 ?
Microdipodops megacephalus 2 ? 2 ?
A coyote was heard howling nearby
after dark, but it did not get caught
in any of the 3 sets of spring traps.
Johnson and I made which were baited
with "Schultz's Animal Scent." Skrikes
and horned larks are abundant along with sage sparrows.
