inclination to "lead" me; then a creakl
came up the street and scared her
into the air. She flew right up to
36-40 feet and wheeled back in the
direction of her nest. This is by far
the largest chase of the sort I have
engaged in, and her excessive compulsion
to distract may have resulted from my
handling her eggs.
[illegible] lies the germ of an interesting
behavior study - an analysis of distraction
in terms of hard long or for the parent
bird will lead under different con-
ditions of initial disturbance at at dif-
ferent phases of breeding cycle - could
be worked out comparatively with
several local species.
1400 in area between beach ridge and
deolive site - encountered a "distraction"

than a nest as the bird got up about
40 yds ahead of me, and flew to me
[illegible] "on a run" about 20 yds away
and immediately going into the distraction
display, I followed - she led in a straight
course away from the area. I could not
keep nearer than 20-30 yds behind,
