2 July (Barrow), Alaska
Nest with 4 eggs in grassy area back
of ARL animal house. Nest a depression
on a slight mound, lined with dry grass
and reed stems with some upright grasses
+ wishes high vining the nest but not
forming a canopy over it.

I examined same nest again. One of the
4 eggs was broken open at the small
end - bird sitting on nest at the time.
Contents of egg showed embryo well-
advanced with feathers (down) visible
along all major tracts. Female extremely
"distracted" fluttering right up to my
feet while I was at the nest. I pre-
Hailed to chase her in order to see how
far she would lead me. I kept about
20 feet behind and walked slowly so
as not to press her. She displayed
the usual Evolia posture - squatting,
fluffing out rump feathers, fluttering
wings and squeaking. She led me
onto the gravel area, along side ARL
and out to the main street past the
post office and right on down in the
direction of the airstrip. We covered
a distance of about 200 yards, and she
