Lilleland 1933
June 30 Itinerary.
Went with Ward Russell and Paul Wilson into canyon NE of Campsite to take instruction in setting out traps. Ward Russell was the instructor.
Method followed briefly:- Setting for Neosorex with mouse traps baited with masticated oatmeal, traps set in narrow places below waterfalls and on small beaches. About thirty traps were set for Neosorex, the creek bed being ideal for the purpose. Brush rather open, slope quite uniform and not too steep. Intervals between traps about 40 feet. Noted that several trees were baited as we walked up canyon- these being mostly pinyons.
About a half mile up the canyon we came to an outcropping rising steeply from the stream bed, to our left as we walked up canyon. This marked point of divergence from water course as Ward Russell set traps on right (east) side of canyon wall. Traps were set under rocks for Neotoma and in more level spots for Peromyscus and Perognathus.
The upper part of the creek bed was spotted with small meadows, in which grew flags (Iris) Delphinium, Penstemon and occasionally Mimulus and usually in these small meadows we found gopher mounds. All told we set out four gopher traps.
After following the water course for 1 1/4 miles
