Reportedly about 180 ac. have been set aside for the National Conservancy. These forest patches seem to be predominantly of 1 species of tree which has large leathery leaves. Also all the forests on Kaua'i weakened from the strong prevailing winds. Took photos of this forest new job with Lapaluki Rd.
Aug 7 - Took 09:30 flight to Honolulu where we had + 3 hrs wait for flight back to San Francisco. In the gardens at the airport, saw 18 & 19 Red-vented Bulbuls, Corn Myna's, and House Sparrows. Arrived home ~ 10:30 pm PDT.
Mammals noted on Lana'i:
feral cats - common - Lana'i City + around Manele Bay
Mus musculus - remains in owl pellets found on Keana Rd (Aug 5), 1 dead individual found on Ship-wreck Beach Rd (Aug 6), & 1 seen near corns and dusk quiet S. of Lana'i City (Aug 6).
Axis deer - signs seen - rubs, + Serge Watts seeing them frequently and Lana'i City Deer sign (tracks) + dropping + tracks) abundant and in dry forests in the vic. of Cardle #2 Site. Three groups (8,2,2) seen along the Keana Rd, & also found 1 feralized skeleton (including part of skull).
"mariflon" - a large slender lizard seen at our lowest water on the Keana Rd (Aug 5) - n=4. Two individuals seen on the lower part of the Kaomukanu Rd. [illegible] (Aug 6). Noted prominent black stripe in shading
