LIDICKER 1991 Birds Hawaii cont. Hawaiian Finch - few, in Hilo + other sites but very rare N. Cardinal - com. in Hilo + at low elevations elsewhere Nutting Mannikin (Finchbird) - com. in Hilo n=17 (not counting hawks) Also saw mangroves on numerous occasions, various elevations. Aug 3 cont. George gave us a tour of Lanai City + vicinity, including the Koele Lodge. Played "putting golf" with G. & Kathy, + visited swimming club's facilities (5:14 pm). Aug 4 George took us to Manele Bay after touring pineapple fields. Showed us newly opened Manele Bay Hotel + went swimming at Hulopoe's Bay beach + went snorkeling off cliff's edge of land (got with a large h ly. fish 2:32 with fine dark line along side, ~1 1/4 ft in length). More swimming. Dinner at Koele Lodge (8:30 pm - 10:30). Aug 5 From 10:00 -18:50 pm, drove a "jeep" for George + found and isolated ~10:15 -~14:00 drive up Mount Trol for Ned. Got almost to highest point before coming to a giant sand puddle we could not get through after several tries (5.3 mi. from cemetery at lower end of trail). Walked 1/2 + mi. to crest of trail + then returned the way we came. About 50 ft. below the crest (~1000 m.)=3320 ft. + caught a small skink that was disappearing into the heavy fern ground cover (WZL 4112). Nearly we saw another skink just a bit slightly larger. Took photo of general area. Also found a small earthworm on the path, so it was badly dehydrated we put it in a puddle in the road.
