July 30 cont.
A thundering spider that was quite small and jumped like a
Giant toge when threatened. Returned to Hilo for
lunch. Returned to Kbyng 11 & continued on to the North,
Perk. Drove around Kilauaea Crater to S (came - cloudwise),
& took chain-of-craters road, to the coast & N to where we
could just see lava flow (23 mi. from start of rd.). Walked
1+2:1/2 hrs over lava, found old stone church yard & on to where
lava was still flowing into the ocean. Quite a sight.
Returned to complete our circuit q Kilauaea Crater when
it got dark. Returned to Hilo for dinner at the Fiji
Restaurant (Hilo Hotel).
July 31 - 07:00-12:30 Went on field trip organized by
Conference or conference on avian history. Our 3 leaders
were: Larry Freed, Becky Carr, & Joan Lepson.
Also on the trip was John Krebs (Oxford), Colin B
(New Zealand), & Diane Hawks (Ariz St U). We took the
Saddle road to a Kapute at mi/4 21 & explored this
completely. It is arguably one of the best spots for native birds
on the island. Then we took the "four lane road" with stands M
S and drove down Loa & i lovely peninsula with 4-wheel drive.
Drove in ~3 mi., & walked another mile to a Kapuka on W
side of rd. Explored this, took our lunch. On way back we
stopped to see Kaumana Cove ~ 4 mi. from H:10.
