LIDICKER 1991 July 30 cont. A thundering spider that was quite small and jumped like a Giant toge when threatened. Returned to Hilo for lunch. Returned to Kbyng 11 & continued on to the North, Perk. Drove around Kilauaea Crater to S (came - cloudwise), & took chain-of-craters road, to the coast & N to where we could just see lava flow (23 mi. from start of rd.). Walked 1+2:1/2 hrs over lava, found old stone church yard & on to where lava was still flowing into the ocean. Quite a sight. Returned to complete our circuit q Kilauaea Crater when it got dark. Returned to Hilo for dinner at the Fiji Restaurant (Hilo Hotel). July 31 - 07:00-12:30 Went on field trip organized by Conference or conference on avian history. Our 3 leaders were: Larry Freed, Becky Carr, & Joan Lepson. Also on the trip was John Krebs (Oxford), Colin B (New Zealand), & Diane Hawks (Ariz St U). We took the Saddle road to a Kapute at mi/4 21 & explored this completely. It is arguably one of the best spots for native birds on the island. Then we took the "four lane road" with stands M S and drove down Loa & i lovely peninsula with 4-wheel drive. Drove in ~3 mi., & walked another mile to a Kapuka on W side of rd. Explored this, took our lunch. On way back we stopped to see Kaumana Cove ~ 4 mi. from H:10. Meeting all afternoon; banquet in evening. Aug 1+2 - meeting all day & evening of 1st. Aug. 3 - Left Hawaii for Maui at 09:00 & then on to Lana'i arriving 12:00; met by my brother George.
