We stopped at Wind Cave Natl Pk but could not
get on a tour & the cave so we continued north. In
Custer State Pk. we took the 18 mi. Wildlife Rd. & it
was dark before we could make it around - beautiful
drive well worth the $6 entrance fee. Took US 16 to
Custer when we got a motel - with some difficulty.
Saw lots of B/I's - tired previous days in the parks &
~50 hison including quite a few lone males. Also
saw elk/ponies in several places. Bird(s) seen:
Mountain Bluebird - 20+ Western Bluebird - 1
Red-wing (all ♀) - 25+ Corn. Nightherk - 50+
Flicker - saw, yellow-shyked + 1 red-npt. wintergreen
Yellow-rumped Warbler - 12+, Brewer's Blackbird - 1 pr.
Brewer's Sparrow - 10+ (slender, long-tailed, pined legs,
stripe (s) on crown ; some lightly streaked ?)
White-winged Junco - 1 + saw. least
Western Tanager - 1♂ + 1♀
W. Kingbird - 2+, Barn Swallow - 25+
Red hr. Nuthatch - 1 head, Grasshopper Sparrow - 1, singing 2x
Chicken - 1head, Red-shouldered Tanager - 1 ♀ + 1 mgn.
w/1 gy, B. Ld. Cardinal.
Aug 18 - Left Custer 08:35 & drove E on US 16 to
Stokede Lake, th N on 87 & US 385 to 85 to Deadwood
to I90 & the W. into Wyoming. Birds noted:
Red hr. Nuthatch - 1 D.cr. Cornseed - 2 (Stok. L.)
Sora - 2 mgn. (1 bld odding) - Stok. L., Melbnd - 5,
Pintail - 1, Left. S. Dat. ~12:07, Barn Swallow - +
+ Red Squirrel - 2+ + 1 doe.
Also chipmunks
