LIDICKER

June 30 cont.
to village of Poltuk . Then we crossed to E side of
Narew River & then continued N another 10 km. to
a small village near the river - Szygotowek . This is
where Aleksander Wasilewski (Olek) & Maria Mazurkiewicz
(Vika) have a weekend cottage. Because the map this
Olek had drawn for me was not good, we went ~15 km
further NE to Obryte before turning back & eventually
finding them. I drove the Polish first from Poltute on.
Visited, heard for a long excursion ( Olek is ornithologist)
making way at the River -~ 1 km from boat when tremendous
wind, rain, + hail storm broke out & we were absolutely
covered by the drive we got back to the land. Atx, talked.
I looked some more after the storm: beautiful! Left
~ 20:00 & drove as back home to Warszawa - lots
of mud & deep puddles to maneuver through before reaching
fravament. Stopped for about 1 min. near Zegrze near where
the Bug + Narew rivers join. Birds seen today:
Gray Heron - 55+ including a nesting colony & at
least 20 nests mostly with newly fledged young.
White Stork - 7+ incl. 3 or 4 nests, 1 with half grown up.
Black Stork - Olek showed us a nest that has been used for
at least 20 yrs. but was abandoned this year when hunters
built a small wooden tower ~ 150 m. from the nest.
Mallard - 30+ (Zegrze)
Ferrugineous Duck - 1 (Zy.)
Tufted Duck - 1+ (Zy.)
Buzzard - 1
