Evanssted, Hedmark, Norway
11-12 June
June 11 - Left Universitet i Oslo with Henry P. Andreassen
~ 13:30 in his car, drove N on E6 to join S. J.
Hansen. Turned NE to Elverum & then crossing from
Gudbrandsdal to Osterdalen in which the River Glomma
flows to Fredrikstad (it is the longest river in Norway).
Turned N to follow river to Rena & then to
Evanssted which is in the District of Hedmark (Hansen
is my pilot). Bought groceries in Elverum. Arrived in
Evanssted ~ 17:00. This is the site of Evanssted Skogsstata
and our experimental plots. We looked over the 7 (1/2 hect)
enclosures. Then lunch & took a walk around
before dinner at 20:00. At about 21:30 we walked again
to the RR station in Evanssted which consists of a short
platform & a small open shed with a bench. Got back
~ 22:30. Was quite cold with wind, wind later in darkness.
There is still snow on top of nearby mountains, esp. close
Himten. Birds seen: The Director of the Station
A., Hans A. Johannesen and I & Capt. Eithlin. We heard
Johannesen a number of times but they did leave from the cabin
was already around some distance away.
Golden Plover -3+ (these are the "Southern form" with
blatting black bellies marked and w/ white)
* Woodcock - 1 & flying & listening calling just above trees
along a creek (beak) at ~ 22:00,
Curlew? - 1 lg. shaggy bird seen with Director; had
a two-pronged call or big size most likely was a curlew.
