LIDICKER 1990 May 28 cont. * Corn Bunting - 1 n = 18 May 29 Left Bellinzona 09:50 by car w/ Marco. Drive at Lucarno on Lago Maggiore & crossed border into Italy at Camedo. At village of Re in Lepontine Alps is a giant cathedral completely out of proportion to the size of the village. Just W. of Malenco and base of Monte Rosa (4556 m) WSW stood a an Swiss border (Pennine Alps). Birds seen so far are only : Chiffchaff, Caroim Curr - 4, Swift - 2, + Passer sp. Passed back into Switzerland at Bordo at 10:55. Then went over Simplon Pass (2005 m) at 11:25. Stayed briefly. Took photo looking N. Saw 1 Fieldfare. It was quite chilly at the Pass. Down in the Rhone R. valley at Brig we saw the first Mayfly since Germany. At Sierre the culture turned from Germanic to mostly French. Then were lots of vineyards starting down close. Saw Sw. Jay & Black Kite, White Wagtail, + Carroim Curr sp. Turned NW at Martigny. Saw Buzzard near Villanexure (S. of Montreux). Stopped for picnic at next stop just S. of Montreux. Took photo of down to Lac Leman. At this spot were 4 Hwa Sparrows, 2 Buzzards, 2 Mayflies. Continued day N. east of Lac Leman to Nyon. About 6 Milvus seen. In Nyon also saw Chiffchaff & Green Finch. Visited with Andre Meygan at his Office & then went to his home (wife: Martine) for coffee & conversation. Down to the University of Lausanne
