IDICKER 1989 ITC V Italian Trip - 18 Aug. to 6 Sept. 19-29 Aug. Rome. There was little opportunity to observe birds, but we were surprised at how common small birds were. Every evening they could be seen around every street and were especially common in the vicinity of abandoned buildings and ruins. 30-Aug. to 2 Sept. Abruzzo Mtns. tour, including climb to 3000m - Maiella Range. In the forests around Celano, there is a fertile valley representing a former lake bed. Pines have been planted extensively on slopes. There is no native forest left in this area; originally it was beech forest. Some beech trees have been planted however (~30 yrs ago) especially on slope where Luigi Boitani's wolf study area is located. In addition to wolves, Boitani's group also studied free dogs. They do not use same hunting strategies as efficient killing behavior like wolves. This is a limestone area with soil poor so recovery is very difficult. This is also a ski resort area and they is now the driving economic force of the area. Both wolves and dogs feed mainly at human dumps, but wolves only at the more remote ones. Beasts go to tree line; this area dominated by meadows. On south-facing slopes there is a mixed oak forest, and this is certainly native. Stayed at Hotel Zeus in Campo di Giove. Hiked for 1/2 day on 30th, and whole day on 31st in Riserva Naturale Valle dell'Orfento with headquarters in Carpinico Terme. On Sept. 1 hiked almost to highest peak of Maiella.
