July 24 cont.
With him to go flying tomorrow morning. Also
talked with Jean Ernest who works on something
here regarding land. At ~0900 we met George
West coming out of the forest. 1 Arctic
Bird (IAB). The gang 3 went to
Bouvenge Creek Exp. Forest. We looked around
with open forest, including some clear cut &
selectively cut stands. Picked bushberry raspberries.
Then we went into the River Valley, across a bill-
shore & tamarack bog at edge of river.
Saw 2 red squirrels chasing over the river. We
examined a no. of squirrel middens in the white
spruce and found almost any sign of activity
(the first 2 core crops were poor). The black spruce
bog had an impressive no. of birds - including baldpate,
White winged crossbill, 1 Lincoln Sparrow, & 1 female
Pine Grosbeak, & Hudsonian chickadee.
Back back to IAB about 1400. Talked to
George West, Lou Stratton (on leave from U. South
Carolina & looking on cooperative beaglefish structure
in microcosm, soft groundglaciers, etc., & oceanic)
M. Janssen for Montana have a double hike while
Tennessee Valley bridge. Have a single hike), Larry
Duffy (assist to Stratton & interested in M. xanthographus),
& Peter Morrison.
Had dinner with Steve West & Don Pengelly
