LIDICKER 1981 Sept 25 cont. Catch: Microtus oeconomus -1, M. arvalis -2 (keep as 1): Apodemus sylvaticus -1, A. agrarius -1, + 1 dead Sorex. In Andrzejewski's kitchen we pulled out a few J. field mice on the gas stove. The Roman went to work, + the rest of us down to the M. arvalis study area, picking up R. Rozalska on the way. This made 4 of us plus a driver. The study area is a government farm about 25 km W of Warsaw called Prusocin. On this farm they have 3 grids, each 15x15 days at 5-m intervals = 1/2 ha. One grid is in an open meadow cut once for hay & subsequently grazed. Although this is currently a peak in numbers of arvalis, they caught only 24 on this grid. Fairly strong wind kept setting off their traps because the open door sticks strongly into the air. The other 2 grids are in alfalfa ("lucerne"). They produced a much lower catch & branding was still going on in the pastures. We also saw evidence of construction of deeper winter barns in the nearby area of this farm. They are now actively creating the feline separation - fences since several hours ago I showed them the technique ("fot" = foot; "r" = rel. open, "rd" = wide open). I also demonstrated the fast-arterial bleeding technique on 2 voles; it worked fine. K. successfully tried it on a 3rd individual. Finished 3 grids at 12:00. Returned to a small trailer by the farm's own village which they use to sort/tag dead animals + have a little "far-munch". We found the
