LIDICKER 1981 Sept. 19 cont. We drove SW down to Wista and climbed hills at Kozice Kosciuszki which is a hill built as a monument to Tadeusz Kosciuszko. There is an Austrian fortress nearby around this hill, and it is now a hotel + museum. Light rain from early afternoon to evening. We continued on to a private restaurant located below the hill with an old monastery on it (Wolski Fort). We had to wait awhile but it was a good meal. Met a girl from Alliana College Pennsylvania who is studying here at Jagiellonian Univ. to learn Polish (arranged by Kosciuszko Foundation). We had lunch with her + her boyfriend who did not speak English. Then we served gifts from US in the program on a total of about 30 foreigners in all. Adam took me back to the hotel when I rested for a couple of hours. Then he picked me up again and took me to his flat. Then I met Dr. Zita Pita who was joined by J. Kostowski + a student from Caltech Univ. who is studying 3 weeks with Adam working with Tribolium. We had a nice dinner (a large summer squash with buckwheat, potatoes, mushrooms, salad + a good wine from Portugal), and a good discussion lasting until 15 past midnight. Adam told me about Jozef Pilsudski, an important early 20th century Polish military leader + politician for whom a small hill has also been built as a monument.
